I am so grateful for the opportunity to join hundreds of theatre practitioners at this year's Theatre for Young Audiences festival and conference. I first learnt about TYA in 2016 when a colleague received a fellowship, granting him a scholarship to take on a theatre for youth project involving an international theatre group. It just so happened that fellow found out that I started a theatre company with teens and young adults to help promote and develop the performing arts industry in Grenada.
It wasn't long after that we had graduated and was on our way to my home country to devise a play or several short plays surrounding the theme "Acceptance'.
You see a seed was planted back in 2016, and it would change my entire outlook of theatre in a way that I could have never imagined. Nearly one year after The Acceptance Project and here I am awaiting a flight to attend the biannual TYA festival and conference. of Course this was no easy feat. As many things in my life, there were many challenges getting to the festival, including raising funds for accommodation, airfare, meals and registration fee. The entire process was a test of my faith, tenacity and love for theatre. TYA made this conference seem like the only thing that mattered. I started receiving weekly emails and social media updates, and so attending was now at the forefront of my mind and I would do anything to attend.
Thanks to generous friends and lovers of the arts, who gave financial support and through kind words of encouragement, I am able to attend this very amazing conference. I see this opportunity as an investment and as a result of the gifts received, I am able to help develop theatre and arts education in Grenada.
